Salem is a brand name of cigarettes that was launched in 1956 by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and became one of the pioneers in the tobacco industry that introduced a menthol brand. Although Salem is not as widespread as other cigarette brands, it is already sold in over 30 countries and is a leading menthol brand there. The packs for this brand were revised at a certain point as the Black Labels blend was added. A single cigarette with a dark green filter was introduced into the pack being dubbed «The Lucky» because of the tradition of smoking the first cigarette in the box last. The name of the brand originated from the place the R.J. Reynolds Company was founded – Winston-Salem in North Carolina. The brand’s slogans also quite famous – one of them goes «You can take Salem out of the country, but...you can't take the country out of Salem». Another slogan used later was «Springtime...it happens every Salem». This brand was always especially successful because of smart marketing techniques that were used – for instance, the refreshing taste of menthol was always linked (with the help of advertising) to spectacular outdoor scenes with nature and pure water.
